Carmel Elementary students recognized Earth Day by participating in a student council-sponsored recycling contest.

Ashley Aletto, a third-grade teacher and co-sponsor of the council, said students were asked to bring in paper from home that could be recycled. Jeanne Singleton’s fourth-grade class brought in the most, with 923 pounds.

Aletto said the school recycled 6,005 pounds of paper.
