Stingy pitching enables Bulldogs to keep county title

Staff gives up just 3 runs in 3 games

Three games. Three runs allowed.

That, essentially, is how Brownsburg’s baseball team won the Hendricks County Tournament, sweeping through Tri-West, Avon and Cascade on Saturday and moving to 4-0 — with six total runs surrendered on the season.

Not a bad way to start off.

“They’ve been working hard in the offseason and getting ready for the season,” coach Pat O’Neil said of his pitching staff. “It was a good showing on their part and gave everybody on the whole team confidence.”

In the first game Saturday, winning pitcher sophomore Matt Bowman and junior Kohl Bennett combined to beat Tri-West 14-1 in five innings.

In the semifinal — a rivalry game with Avon — three pitchers collaborated to shut out the Orioles 3-0. Senior Matt Duncan started and went two innings, followed by two innings from junior Alex McGowan, and three from junior Dalton Wentz (who earned the win and moved to 2-0). The three pitchers allowed two hits and two walks while striking out 12.

Freshman Isaac Sampen got the start in the final against Cascade, which O’Neil called “a good young team.” Sampen settled down from early wildness to allow four hits and two runs in four innings. Bennett then entered — with the game tied 2-2 — and threw 21/3 shutout innings as Brownsburg took the lead (Bennett earned the win). Wentz finished off the Cadets 4-2 to keep the trophy with the Bulldogs.

“Early in the season, you’re out there trying to find who can do what,” O’Neil said. “I thought our kids came to play.”

That included the Bulldogs’ defense, which O’Neil calls pretty solid.

It also included senior catcher Tucker Barnhart, who smacked a grand slam in the opener. Although Barnhart had only two hits through four games — he’s 2-for-8 — he also had drawn seven walks.

“When he gets pitched to,” O’Neil said, “he hits the ball.”

Will that happen as the season progresses, and will the pitching prowess continue? It’s to be seen, and soon — as Brownsburg was scheduled to open its difficult Hoosier Crossroads Conference slate Wednesday and today against McCutcheon.

Brownsburg is one spot outside the top 10 in the coaches’ Class 4A poll.
