Stay-in-school video tonight at Ben Davis
Ben Davis High School will serve as the city’s host to feature a video that will address education issues.
The documentary “Get Schooled, You have the Right,” will encourage students to stay in school and will feature the first American Idol singer Kelly Clarkson, NBA star LeBron James and President Barack Obama.
The school will air the video at 8 p.m. tonight, 1200 N. Girls School Road, said Assistant Superintendent Jeff Butts. Before the documentary community members, students and families can come and interact with local politicians and talk about education issues before viewing the video.
The Westside district was selected to host the event because Wayne Township Schools received a $351,046 AT&T Aspire for the expansion of the Learning Lab Credit Recovery Program, Butts said. Last November the AT&T Foundation gave $800,000 in grants to educational institutions and nonprofit organizations across the state to support high school retention programs for at-risk students.
“Our Learning Lab Credit Recovery Program helps our young people get back on track so that they can graduate and go on to achieve their potential,” said Butts.
The film will also be aired simultaneously on BET, MTV, VH1, CMT, Comedy Central, Spike TV and Nickelodeon.
The documentary kicks off the national Get Schooled initiative co-developed by the Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation and Viacom.
