State Police undermine a good gun-carry system

I am a person of “good character” with a permit to carry a gun and I find it appalling that the Indiana State Police would allow criminals to do so (“Should men like these be allowed to carry a gun?,” Oct. 11).

My carry permit should be something that identifies me as a “good guy” to the police, a certification that I am the most law-abiding of the law-abiding. Many of us have permits because our jobs require it, our lives have been threatened or we require a bit more precaution than others.

The permit process here in Indiana is a sane one; but the State Police, by ignoring the local authorities’ recommendations, is undermining the entire system and doing everyone in the state a disservice.
