Northern Indiana will gain 700 jobs with two announcements today from the governor and economic development leaders.

Gov. Mitch Daniels said startup Zuna Infotech, which provides information technology engineering and computer services, will establish its initial headquarters in Kokomo’s Inventrek Technology Park. The Kokomo Howard County Development Corp., Purdue University and Indiana University Kokomo established the high-tech business incubator and state-certified technology park.

Zuna will hire 400 workers by 2012 in Kokomo, according to the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

In a separate announcement, Onward Manufacturing Co. of Waterloo, Ontario said that it will locate its first U.S. grill production center in Huntington, creating more than 300 new jobs by 2011.

“New jobs in Kokomo, new jobs in Huntington, 700 in all; days like this prove that preserving a low-tax, pro-business environment is the best way to fight our way out of this national recession,” said Daniels in a news release from the Indiana Economic Development Corp.

Daniels also referred to the downturn in the automotive segment that Kokomo has suffered.

“If ever a community deserved good economic news, Kokomo does. Now let’s work to make this the first of a long run of new jobs and more diverse businesses in one of Indiana’s truly great cities.”

Zuna Infotech provides technology functions and business services often outsourced to other countries at a competitive rate locally, according to the release from the Indiana Economic Development Corp., a 12-member board headed by Daniels.

The company plans to provide services in product engineering, information technology and research on security, healthcare and technical support.

Zuna is accepting the Indiana Economic Development Corp.’s offer of up to $1.16 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $145,000 in training grants based on Zuna’s job creation plans.

Anju Bajaj and Jim Harter are founding partners of Zuna.
