Stars out for Black Expo
Celebrity watchers should fire up their cameras next month as a cache of big-name artists pops into town to add glitter to Indiana Black Expo’s annual Summer Celebration.
Former Los Angeles LakerMagic Johnsonwill speak at a young entrepreneurs seminar and at the black business conference July 14.
But the retired NBA star won’t get all of the attention.
During the July 16 Pacers Sports&Entertainment Corporate Luncheon, Expo will honorJamie Foxx,who earned an Oscar for his portrayal of musician Ray Charlesin 2004’s “Ray,” as Entertainer of the Year. ActressGabrielle Union(“Cadillac Records,” “Bad Boys II”) will receive this year’s Screen Image Award; vocalistCharlie Wilson, who had a chart-topping solo record this year and is spokesman for the Prostate Cancer Foundation, will receive the Rev. Charles Williams Award; andMax Siegel, an Indianapolis native and former president of global operations at Dale Earnhardt Inc., will receive the Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
Union also is scheduled to host the July 17 All White Kick-Off Party, at which guests wear white and singerGinuwineandDJ Kid Capriwill perform. On July 18, the list of performances includes R&B croonerEric Benet(former husband of actress Halle Berry),SWV,Sugarhill Gang,Whodini,Doug E. Freshand jazzmanAlex Bugnon.
A free July 19 concert will feature soul artistMusiq SoulchildandMaze, featuring Frankie Beverly.

About 350 people caught the Indianapolis Civic Theatre’s interpretation of the late 1960s and early 1970s television phenomenon “Rowan&Martin’s Laugh-In” on Thursday.
The fundraising show, directed byRobert J. Sorbera, was put together by a cast of well-known locals including Civic Theatre board of trustees honorary memberHilary Stout Salatich, who played actressGoldie Hawn.
Also in the cast were Civic Theatre Board memberCharlie Sutphin, who portrayed the late ukulele-playing pop singerTiny Tim, and artist and educatorSteve Mannheimer, who played comic actorAlan Sues.
Organizers hoped to raise $25,000 to $30,000 from the fun-filled evening.
Organizers of the Indianapolis Early Music Festival held a cocktail party Friday at the Basile Opera Center.
The soiree served as a way to thank supporters and as an avenue to sell tickets for the festival, said Managing DirectorGail McDermott-Bowler.
