Some commuters roll in on two wheels
A Downtown location usually crowded with cars on weekdays and motorcycles on weekends was the home to hordes of bicyclists this morning.
The Ride Your Bicycle to Work Day brought out a collection of people who use two wheels and pedal power to commute, encouraged by a cool day that was perfect for riding.
“No problem, and we came all the way down from Eagle Creek,” said Tim Wozniak, 53. “It’s improved in the last five years.”
“I’m normally a fair weather rider because I have to wear a shirt and tie,” said Josh Clements, 28, who rode Downtown from Fountain Square. “It’s faster to ride in than to drive in.”
The southwest quadrant of Monument Circle was blocked off for bicycles, with bike racks replacing the circle’s motor traffic. Those who rode to work were rewarded with a breakfast and a proclamation from Mayor Greg Ballard, who is scheduled to lead a bicycle ride on Saturday morning.
Some of those riders used new bike lanes on New York and Michigan Streets, lanes set up in recent weeks by the Ballard administration.
“I’ve had no problems — I like that,” said Dylan Roahrig, 37, who rode in from the Eastside on the new lanes. “They’re well marked and the drivers are very respectful of them.”

I think it’s great to encourage more biking, but here’s one thing that troubles me. Along Alabama Street, left-turn lights were put in to keep traffic moving along the Cultural Arts Trail. That would be great … if there were real traffic to keep moving. As it is now, it’s not that busy at all, so you’re left with cars idling as no one goes but having to wait for the light to change. That seems at cross purposes with the green-inspired trail initiative.
But it might be the times of day I go by. Has anyone else noticed those being more effective?
