Snowy, cold days ahead
The first substantial snow accumulation of the New Year could come this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
After a chance of freezing rain and sleet early Saturday, snow is expected to begin as the day progresses, and there could be as much as three inches of snow on Saturday, according to the Weather Service's forecast. The heaviest snow accumulation is expected to come north of Indianapolis.
More snow is expected on Monday and Tuesday, and it will probably stay around for a while because temperatures next week will drop far below freezing. Tuesday night's low is forecast to be 5 above and Wednesday night's low will be 7 above.
Indianapolis has had only 0.8 inches of snow this month. An average January has 9.3 inches of snow.
There is a chance of snow in Indianapolis before 1 p.m.. Today will be mostly cloudy with a high of 33.
