Like any other decade there are plenty of films that are full of the local flavor, so to speak, reflecting the goofy fashions and silly plotlines. But no more so than the 90s or even this decade. I think the acting in the best films of the 80s stands up pretty well. And a lot of actors who worked regularly in the 80s are still working. For instance, check out "Top Gun" (not that Top Gun is one of the best movies of the 80s, mind you, but it's a popular one that comes to mind). I'd say the acting and even the special effects are pretty close to today's standards. A lot of the special effects are dated and bad compared to today's blockbusters, but keep in mind too that there are plenty of movies today where the CGI is pretty bad. With the exception of Mouth's Purple Rain shirt (and of course the presence of Cyndi Lauper's music), there are really not many pop culture references in the film. "Back to School" is a great 80s movie. Robert Downey Jr's hair alone is worth the price of admission, and seeing Paulie from Rocky play the tough guy is hilarious too. Plus you have William Zabka more or less reprising his role from The Karate Kid, only in college now (okay, so he's a little more pampered and spoiled than Johnny Lawrence). How about the Sean Penn "Bad Boys?" Actually, I think "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead is 90s...and IMdB confirms it. But on the whole, Caralyn, your list is super.
