It'd have to be Richie Havens doing Bob. It might also be Jerry doing Bob.

Ben Neff

Great to see a couple of other fans of the Anticon label. I do enjoy Hymie's Basement, Why?, 13 & God, cLOUDDEAD, Atmosphere, Fog, Controller 7, Odd Nosdam, Buck 65, Sage Francis and probably a few others. Not all those musicians are currently on Anticon, but I'm pretty sure all have at least contributed at some point. Sage Francis is definitely one of my favorite artists as far as lyrical content goes. Local musician Scott Matelic, who I'm also a big fan of, has worked with some of those musicians.

I also like the poetic lyrics of some of the artists in the so called "modern psych folk" genre such as Joanna Newsom, Devendra Banhart and Cocorosie.

As far as music without lyrics, I'm often inspired by electronic musicians with a laid back sound such as Boards of Canada, Air, Kelpe and Röyksopp.

Anton Newcombe from the Brian Jonestown Massacre writes great lyrics about love, longing, hate, and angst. One of his best song titles off his new album, My Bloody Underground, is called, "Bring me the head of Paul McCartney on Heather Mill's Wooden Peg (Dropping Bombs on the White House)" It's a love song.

My son's lullaby is "Fix You" by Coldplay. I've sung that to him since he was born. I'd like to think the band wrote that song for their children...anyway, lyrically and musically this band makes me happy.

Wow! I've never known a single other soul who knew about the greatness of The Rosebuds. I much prefer their older stuff, "The Rosebuds Make Out" being my favorite.

I also never knew anyone who could listen (with enjoyment) to Subtle, or anything else from Anticon. I also really like 13&God from that label.

For lyrical content, I don't think anything beats Bright Eyes.

From "Bowl of Oranges"

And we'll keep working on the problem we know we'll never solve
Of Love's uneven remainders, our lives are fractions of a whole.
But if the world could remain within a frame, like a painting on a wall.
I think we would see the beauty then, we would stand staring in awe
at our still lives posed, like a bowl of oranges,
like a story told, by the fault lines and the soil.

With lyrical content as the number one consideration:

Bob Dylan has always been at the top of my very short list of the best singer songwriters of all time. IMHO, his songs will still be relevant in 40 years when most pop artists are forgotten.

Blixa Bargeld, no one can touch him for vocal range and general strangeness, can't even come close. He's a vocal anomaly and he keeps getting better with age, he's currently 49. He's also incredibly strange looking. He sings with Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds and his group Einsturzende Neubuaten. His songs are surreal bits of the human condition with a dose of Dadaism and jazz thrown in for good measure, beautiful work, incredible lyrics.

John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Nivek Ogre are also on my top list.

I'm leaving out lots of amazing people like Leonard Cohen, Tori Amos, Lou Reed, Johnny Cash etc...

There are so many bands that are both lyrically and musically satisfying, I think. Blindside, Brave Saint Saturn, Derek Webb, Benjamin Gate, U2, I could go on and on. I love a lot of bands.
