I fail to see the connection between having to choose between losing a computer or a friendship.

I know you probably want to say "Shut the f&*k up, Donnie!" since I am late to the party on this post, but could you elaborate one how the two are connected?

I would rather slam my finger in a car door...

seriously, I have been through 3 phones in the last 2 months and have lost so many important, never to get again numbers... and it is a pain in the ass to put them all back into a new phone.

Sorry to hear about your finger Emily.

I think too, that it would depend on how hard I worked for something, or how badly I screwed things up. Cause I would be really mad at myself for doing something totally dumb and screwing up my computer and losing all my data (esp. all my photography, my programs, files, organization (my back up is not nearly as organized). I do stupid stuff pretty often. Comparatively , sometimes relationships have to come to an end, and if you fought for it, then, while it sucks really bad in the mean time, it might be for the better in the end. And sometimes things will work themselves out. Might not be the same, but life is like that.

I hope things go ok for you.

My computer. I do have everything on it backed up on an external hard drive though. For my friends though, there's no hassle of backing everything up. Just being there for them is back up enough.

I would be a mess if I lost all the original music I currently have on my computer-- a complete mess. Great friends, well, I don't really have any GREAT friends here in Indy yet.

Honestly, losing the tracks would be the worst occurrence imaginable! :/

I'll be the jerk here. My hard drive has virtually every single photo I've taken of my two children. Assuming in this hypothetical situation she means none of this data can be printed out or stored on another form of media (i.e. CD-ROM or DVDs), the contents of my computer then are probably the most precious physical thing(s) I own. There are few people whose friendship I'd trade for my photos of my kids.

This isn't really a fair post. Anyone looks like a jerk for not saying friendship is more important than data. I'd gamble that every one of us has been hurt by someone who promised to never hurt us. Who here doesn't know that those who are closest to our hearts are the ones with the potential to hurt us the most? How many friendships/relationships are actually treasured forever? Its a toss-up for me, as to which I would rather lose. Its been my experience that humans cause a great deal of pain to each other.

Emily: I've slammed my finger in a car door before; it's not nearly as painful as replacing my cell phone and the contacts therein. Fingers heal, but electronics rarely regenerate themselves.

agreed - would much rather lose data than a friendship. Although it almost brings me to tears thinking about losing all the photos i've procrastinated printing and the music i've managed to download, buy, steal, pirate, etc. saved to my drive at home. i'm SUCH a packrat.

Also - beware - in tough times, and in my experience, messes like these tend to come in threes!

It would not be hard to convince me to throw my laptop into White River. I can replace photos, pirated music, ripped dvds, copious amounts of porn and my Super Nintendo emulated games.

My friends on the other hand...I have the best friends anyone could ever ask for. Even if they only pop into my life from time to time I am very blessed to be surrounded by the people I am.

I've always been the type to have friends come and go throughout my life. Every new place means new friendships growing and old ones fading away.

I certainly do not regret any of my past friendships and I have fond memories of everyone. But I honestly cannot even imagine continuing a relationship with somebody that I was friends with 20 years ago. I was a different person then, with different priorities.

Losing files isn't the end of the world, but neither is the natural state of social dynamics. We move on and adapt.

I know this sounds cynical, but I'll say it anyway: It depends on the friend. More than that, it depends on the reason you're not friends with them anymore.

A close friendship should be cherished, nurtured and protected -- it's incredibly valuable. And that's exactly why when one friend violates the sanctity of that friendship -- either through betrayal, deception or some form of reprehensibly bad judgment -- it's often a good idea to distance oneself from (if not ditch altogether) that "friend."

If you've ever been badly burned by a friend and decided to cut ties with them, you know the feeling of liberation and relief that you eventually feel afterwards. It's not that much different from breaking up with a romantic partner. Not all friendships are meant to last.

I'd much rather lose everything I've ever created on my computer. And you can't put a friendship on an external hard drive or blank dvds to avoid losing it.

I hope the next six months go better for you!
