Wine has become a social thing for us as well. When we have something to celebrate...like days that end in "Y" we dig into the wine cellar and see what comes out. Then a sister who'd been living in Germany came home talking up German wines, so I tried those. A trip to Napa in my 20s introduced me to wine tastings. I kind of settled on merlot as a favorite early on -- even during the "Sideways"-inspired popularity of pinot. But I really didn't get into wine until the last 5 or 10 years when I finally had the money to start buying a wider variety of wines on a regular basis and trying new things. Since then, I have learned about the varieties, how its made, visited several wineries and even made a few batches at home. For me, it is a social beverage; I also enjoy drinking and sampling in a place that is not too pretentious. I had a really bad expereince at Deano's with a snotty little waiter who pooped on my nose for stating that I enjoyed some Indiana wines. Since then, I have not been back to any wine bars. I would sample the wines during the events. I really enjoy it, but I'm still very uninformed on the subject of wine. I usually just pick up a bottle at Alabama Liquors based on the label/suggestion.
