I did a quick rundown of the karma point system a while ago:

http://www.indy.com/posts/3322#comment_10950

That said, we've tweaked it a little since then and as always, the best way to tell how we are awarding points is to use the site as usual and check your karmic ledger (linked underneath your karma number on your profile page) and see how you racked up all those points.

Here's how it works: We do have a word floor on getting points for a post (not going to tell you what it is, except to say that it's currently low enough that it has to be really short to fall under).

That said, you'll still get points for the comments left on a short post ... so, if you don't want to reward short posts, don't comment.

As for short comments, check your karma profile ... I think you'll see that short comments don't help you any (but they do help the person you commented on).

Again, we can tweak this stuff at any point if we see folks seriously gaming the system (and just dump all a users points if they really cross the line ... but I don't know for sure what it would take to reach that level, but assure me, it'll be obvious).

One other key point: in the end it's a sweepstakes ... those above 1,000 points at the end of the month are in the pool for all three prizes. First place doesn't have an advantage for winning over 36th place: assuming both break the 1,000-point mark.

As for reviews, we like 'em short, tall, even with chicken pox ... :)

I wish one of those tweaks would automatically expel people for opening a pre-determined amount of new one-sentence threads with such topics as "I like puh-tater chips. What's ur favorite kind?" or writing restaurant reviews like "I didn't like it." or "It was fabulous!" It's pretty clear that people are trying to artificially throttle their karma points.

You can find the prizes and assorted info about karma on the karma front at http://www.indy.com/karma

To get an idea of the point structure (which we do tweak from time to time), just keep and eye on your karmic ledger (should be a link under your karma number on your profile page).

Just so we're clear. Star employees and their families are not eligible... so post away folks.

Hmmmm....I thought the same thing. I wondered how people would beat the star employees when they are on the site every single day. At least the site isn't blocked by my employer like the radio stations are.

That, in a sentence, is what will make indy.com a great site and service. Can't do it with out ya.

I have found you get a lot of karma points for rates places. That is what I have been doing any way - plus is nice to let other know what place you recommend. I heard about the prices too - but that was not why I was trying to be my Karma up - I just wanted to see if I could get up there.

I'll contribute to your cause too.
AND I'll let you in on a little secret ... You know that Karma is, briefly, the concept that what goes around comes around. You also know that Indy.com isn't much of a site if people aren't contributing. You hopefully also are aware by now that Karma resets every month (with the exception of 'all time' totals). You see where I'm going with this?
Starting in February, monthly Karma leaders are going to be hooked up with some crazy-nice prizes. Check back Feb 1.
