Rick's Boatyard Cafe (in Eagle Creek) has Gregg Bacon (jazz sax) playing live music, usually once a week. You may want to call and see what day and time.

My favorite place is The Rathskeller. I'm pretty sure they have someone playing every night. Especially in the summer when you can sit outside. But they have indoor shows too. Their chicken cordon bleu fingers are heaven! http://www.rathskeller.com/

Here's some upcoming free shows:

Friday, January 4, 2008, 8:00 PM. The Woomblies Live at the Rathskeller Restaurant.
Saturday, January 5, 2008, 1:00 PM. Impulse Trio Live at the Indianapolis Artsgarden. Featuring a free one-hour music performance. (circle center mall)
Saturday, January 5, 2008, 8:00 PM. Uncle JuJu Live at the Rathskeller Restaurant.

There is the big show Labor Day weekend at White River State Park with fireworks. They usually have about 4 bands that play.

Also, there are a lot of restaurants that provide music while you dine. Cheeseburger in Paradise, Kona Jack's, Jazz Cooker, etc.

Don't miss my favorite: www.jenniedevoe.com She rocks! Friday 1/25/2008 8:00 PM The Rathskellar

There are plenty of free parades and events all year long on the circle. The last big one was probably the lighting of the Christmas tree.

Another good place to find free stuff to do is the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Check out their event calendar. Some of the events have a fee but many are free (except for parking). I like to go to the Stewart's Show (a giant flea market) and the Coin-Op Game Auctions (where arcade owners and other dealers auction off pinball machines, arcade games, and other similar items for cheap).

I like to wander around downtown and people watch. Walk the canal. Look at the art on the Washington Street bridge. Walk around the IMA's/Lilly House garden area. Take a stroll on the Monon. Go to an old graveyard and look at old headstones. The Children's Museum has free days once in a while (one day a month?).

Some of the free things I like to do in Indy (though I don't as often as I should) include the following:

Visit the IMA
Visit art galleries on First Friday
Visit the Indianapolis Arts Garden
Go see live concerts at bars. It's not uncommon for these to be free. Go to the Things to do page click on live music and then do a keyword search of free. Lots of concerts come up.
