One of my favorite shows ever. I discovered it much like you did, through DVD, but fortunately for me I caught it early enough in the series to catch the last couple of seasons on HBO. I rented the first disc at Blockbuster just to see how good it was, and I ended up going back and getting all I could get. We stayed up all night watching them. It had a wicked sense of humor and irony, and wasn't afraid to take risks (such as the brilliant turn it took in the middle of its last season-I won't spoil it for those who might like to get into the show, but it was stunning to me, but if you've seen it you know what I'm talking about). Also, the final episode was probably the best series finale I've ever seen. Great, great show. If you haven't seen SFU, you owe it to yourself to see it.
