I agree he has the right to do what he wants, and going off of what Unicorn said he was certainly victimized, and I'm surely not suggesting he shouldn't be ALLOWED to, but he should use more discretion and choose his night spots a little more carefully at the very least.

But he's in the spotlight, and everyone knows he's got money out the yang, but again he should exercise a small amount of common sense. I mean, there's a reason why I don't hang out at that place, and chief among them is that I don't want to be robbed, shot at, harassed, or otherwise harmed. I can't imagine putting a sign around my neck saying "I make $5,000,000 a year" or whatever around my neck, then going to those types of clubs. That's virtually the case for Tinsley or any of the more recognizable Pacers or Colts who go out in public at night.

It's the kind of thing where you make a lifestyle change like many basketball players especially do, they do from largely poor neighborhoods to an environment like the NBA, but they want to go hang out in their old neighborhoods where the crime is at. It's asking for trouble.

It's unfortunate, but it's a price I think they need to pay.

True these guys aren't like you or I, but I would also like to think that most people don't roam the city with assault rifles looking for a fight. It's terrible that with all of the cool things happening around the city (and we all have our idea of what's cool) that these young people should be expected to stay in.

I fall closer to Chris's views on this one (surprise, surprise). If that article was accurate, it sounds like he wasn't exactly looking for trouble, but those guys are constantly warned that "nothing good happens being out after 1 a.m." and it's true for the most part.

And these guys aren't exactly you or I either. We go out there's a chance we might find some trouble, but when they go out trouble's looking for them. They make millions a year and are the public face of a major multimillion dollar organization that represents not only a corporation but nationally reflects the face of the city. Part of their job description should be representing the organization with class and doing what they have to to stay out of trouble.

Yes he was the victim, but at the same time he of all people should know(as Chris noted, 3 incidents in about a year) and should start deciding to stay home. Have private parties and a hired security force at your house to keep the riff raff out.

I told my friend that Tinsley would be welcome to come hang out with us at the Red Key, where the only trouble he'd get into is putting his feet up on the chair.

I'm generally pretty harsh on the NBA, but I can't find fault with Tinsley here. It may be impossible for Tinsley to avoid "putting himself in situations where trouble may occur". Cloud 9 isn't that rough a place - certainly the Conrad isn't.

The main point to me is that Tinsley didn't actually DO anything. He was shot at and did not return fire and we all know, after the Club Rio debacle, that he is licensed gun owner. Ultimately what you seem to be saying, Christopher, is that Tinsley shouldn't go to clubs and/or he shouldn't have a weapon or associate himself with people who have weapons. I have to say, if I was as much of a target as Tinsley (due to his fame OR his money), I'd sure as hell have a weapon too. I just can't find a way to fault Tinsley here.

It would be wrong of anyone to assume the he KNEW trouble would occur. True these guys are targets, but should they confine themselves to their houses or to hanging out in Carmel because it's "safe"?

I have a right to walk around the Near Eastside at 2 a.m. wearing a suit made of $100 bills. That doesn't mean it's a smart thing to do.

Jamal has been involved in three altercations at nightclubs in a little more than a year. At this point, he's got to know he's going to be a target.

Clearly, Jamal was the victim here. But it's a matter of judgment about putting yourself into situations where you know trouble may occur.

Nice piece.

Not so much a fan of the 30 pop-ups I got going there, but the content is good. And, in this case, I really don't think it was his fault. The whole incident is just ridiculous. Who carries around an ASSAULT RIFLE? In a blue pick-up truck? Seriously.

Great post. All of the people who are quick to judge should read this article first. It shows there is a little more to the story than what the Star reported. You'll have to copy and paste the link thanks to Indy.com's programming.
