I'm working on a story about the regulation of Mixed Martial Arts and I want to know - does Indianapolis want to host an Ultimate Fighting Championship event? Your answers may wind up being incorporated into my story, so don't be surprised if I e-mail you asking for your real name. Thanks!
I would love to see it come to Indy. I am a huge fan of the sport. I not only get all of the UFC pay per view events, I also attend most local events as well. Maybe if the UFC came to town, it would give the local MMA events the boost that they so desperately need.
ps. This is my real name :)
I can't speak for the whole city, but I would LOVE to have a UFC event in Indy. I went to UFC 82 in Columbus, OH. Good. Times.
I would also pay a lot of money to go see a UFC event here. A little known fact that all local MMA fans need to be aware of, though, is that the Indiana State Boxing Commission will take over responsibilities for regulating, liscensing, and inspecting MMA events, fighters, and officials. This is a good thing for improving safety for fighters and avoiding "toughman" competitions with no weight classes or rules. However, it will require fighters to be associated with an established training facility, be liscensed with the state boxing commission, potentially change the rules of a match, and cost the promoters and tax payers more money. I hope that this regulation doesn't prevent an UFC match from coming to Indy, let alone deter local promoters from continuing what they're doing.
UFC in Indy would be great! I've been to both Columbus events and am heading up to Chicago in a couple of weeks for UFC 90. There have been some good fighters that have come out of Indianapolis, so it would be nice to give them a chance to perform on the 'big stage' for their home crowd.
This would be GREAT for the city on several different levels. We would be fools not to bring this money machine to town.
The sport is way too brutal for me. I can't stand watching the guys on the ground, punching each other in the side. That said, I don't see anything wrong with it, if you enjoy that sort of thing. I'm sure it would bring revenue to the city, so I'd be in favor of it.
