Today:
For budget filmmaker John Taylor, the second time's the charm.
After going nowhere with his first film, "Promenade," the Anderson resident has found an outlet for his second, the black comedy "Brainwrap."
Filmed in Anderson on a really low budget, "Brainwrap" is about a trio of slacker siblings who have scammed their wealthy father out of a large sum of money. When Dad dies, an unusual condition in his will threatens what could be a large inheritance for all of them.
The final screenings of "Brainwrap" will be at 7 and 9 p.m. Aug. 21 at Georgetown 14 Cinemas, 3898 Lafayette Road.
First though, we picked Taylor's brain:
Question: How in the world did you come up with the story?
I had an idea for a short film about a guy who was a forensics student who couldn't stand the sight of blood, but nothing ever came of it. I've always been drawn to odd humor. I'm a big fan of "The Twilight Zone" and "Tales From the Crypt," and I wanted to do something like that. It's sort of a warped take on "Brewster's Millions."
"Brewster's Millions" with breast implants.
(Laughs) Right. In a way it's a feature-length episode of "Tales From the Crypt."
What are the advantages/disadvantages of making a film in Indiana?
The people seem to be more eager to lend a hand, even on a minuscule budget like I had. I'd say for the disadvantages, the resources you need are harder to come by, and it's really hard to get your work out there, get it screened. That's what's really tough.
Anything unusual or interesting happen during filming?
I don't know about unusual, but for part of the film one of the actors had to spend like three hours in makeup, and he had to leave town the next morning. We filmed all of his scenes, then realized we'd forgotten to put a bandage on his head that was in a previous shot and had to re-shoot everything.
There's a scene where his character gets hit by a car, and we got lucky and found a stuntman for the shot, and he said "You do have a car, right?" We didn't have the budget for a car to destroy, so I used my own car and just told them to be gentle with it.
