The tanker truck that hit the I-465 overpass Thursday belongs to Propane Transport International, a major Philadelphia-area gas shipper with a safety record rated “satisfactory” by federal officials.

PTI’s 2,761 trucks have been involved in three fatal crashes and 34 accidents with injuries since Oct. 21, 2007, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The company’s trucks have traveled 91.2 million miles since then.

The satisfactory rating is not uncommon for long-haul truck lines, despite crashes or deaths.

For example, Indianapolis-based Celadon Group, whose 3,100 trucks run from Canada to Mexico, has a satisfactory rating after eight fatal crashes in two years, according to the carrier safety administration. Celadon’s fleet traveled 548 million miles during that time.

An executive for PTI owner AmeriGas Partners said he was uncertain late Thursday afternoon what caused the accident in Indianapolis.

“With the facts still unclear, and with us in Houston and a ways away, we are just participating in the investigation and trying to get as many facts as we can,” said David Lugar, AmeriGas Partners vice president for logistics. “We take it quite seriously and are quite concerned.”

Propane Transport, formed in 1950 in Milford, Ohio, was purchased in 1987 by AmeriGas, today considered the nation’s largest propane retailer and wholesaler. It serves 1.3 million residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, motor fuel and wholesale customers from about 600 locations in 46 states.

PTI employs 3,608 people and moves fuel in tankers driven by employees, independent owner-operators and independent fleets. Its tankers also haul butane, anhydrous ammonia, propylene, asphalt, cement and other bulk commodities.

AmeriGas Propane, which had sales in the quarter ended that ended June 30 of $328 million, is owned by publicly traded AmeriGas Partners of King of Prussia, Pa.
