Share your favorites: Lyrics of indie rock

Indie rock — with an “ie” and not a “y” — isn’t easy to define.

Some people say it’s a genre popularized by hipster acts such as the Decemberists, Arcade Fire and Rilo Kiley.

Others say indie rock is defined by a band’s approach to work and artistry. Radiohead, for instance, maintains underground cred even though it’s one of the world’s most popular bands.

And a bare-bones definition of indie rock is simply music that isn’t made for a major label.

Next week’s issue of Indy.com magazine will sort some of this out, and check if indie rock is hipper than ever or too cool for its own good.

In the meantime, what are your favorite lyrics from music’s underground?

I’ll start by sharing a line from Belle & Sebastian’s “If You’re Feeling Sinister”:

“She was into S&M and Bible studies — not everyone’s cup of tea, she would admit to me.”

From “Raining Planets,” by The Crimea

End up working in the Dominos Pizza
Shades on, incognito
Turned down for the manager’s position
for carrying on
where the Fonz left off
in the 60s

“I’m Expanding My Mind” by Superdrag

You can get me slack-jawed,
You were sipping through the last straw,
Barely moving to the last waltz,
To a symphony of my faults,
Wrapped around me like a smoke ring,
Had me set up like a coke sting,
I’m still doing five-to-seven,
Wishing liars got to heaven.

From “9th & Hennepin” by Tom Waits

And no one brings anything small into a bar around here
They all started out with bad directions
And the girl behind the counter has a tattooed tear
One for every year he’s away, she said
Such a crumbling beauty, ah
There’s nothing wrong with her that a hundred dollars won’t fix

From “A Good Day” by Smart Went Crazy

It’s always pretty after an apocalypse
so we strolled past the flowers planted by the Bloods and Crips
And they chose white lilies ‘cause they’re such wacky kids
it was a good day.
Damn right, it was a good day.

From “Big Blue Sea” by Bob Schneider

I tried to tell you all about it
I thought you might’ve heard, I doubt it
Everyday’s a waste, I know
And everyday’s a funeral

I’m cutting out I’m feeling lost
I’ve lost my mind I’m Mr. Frost
I’ve collected all the evidence
I’m off the edge I’m on the fence

And its days like this that burn me
Turn me inside out and learn me
Not to tell you anything I think I know
I think I’ll tell you all that I know
I don’t wanna be alone I want to be a stone
Wanna sink to the bottom of the ocean lie there with you till I’m gone

At the bottom of the big blue sea
Just you and me
The bottom of the big blue sea

At the bottom of the big blue sea
Just you and me
The bottom of the big blue sea

From “You Still Hurt Me” by William Fitzsimmons
I’m not comfortable with how this story ends
We were lovers and now, we’re not even friends
You were perfect and I guess I’m just a creep
But you still hurt me

Too many to choose from:

“You used to slide down the carpeted stairs
or down the banister
you stuttered like a kaleidoscope
’cause you knew too many words
you used to make ginger bread houses
we used to have taffy pulls

Take ecstasy with me, baby
take ecstasy with me.

You had a black snowmobile
we drove out under the northern lights
a vodka bottle gave you those raccoon eyes
we got beat up just for holding hands

Take ecstasy with me, baby
take ecstasy with me."

— Stephin Merritt, Magnetic Fields, “Holiday”

neutral milk hotel – two headed boy (pt.2)

Brother see we are one in the same
And you left with your head filled with flames
And you watched as your brains fell out through your teeth
Push the pieces in place
Make your smile sweet to see
Don’t you take this away
I’m still wanting my face on your cheek

I am a scientist – I seek to understand me
All of my impurities and evils yet unknown
I am a journalist – I write to you to show you
I am an incurable
And nothing else behaves like me

And I know whats right
But I’m losing sight
Of the clues for which I search and choose
To abuse
To just unlock my mind
Yeah, and just unlock my mind

I am a pharmacist
Prescriptions I will fill you
Potions, pills and medicines
To ease your painful lives
I am a lost soul
I shoot myself with rock & roll
The hole I dig is bottomless
But nothing else can set me free

Everything is right
Everything works out right
Everything fades from sight
Because thats alright with me
