Shame on Indy

Lonely Chewbacca alert (is it amber coloured?)

Back at Gen Con today. To my suprise, horror and sadness, I come to report that there was noone visiting Sir Peter Mayhew (I threw in the royalty bit in case the Queen is a reader of indystar.com). The line was empty, and my son, a Star Wars fan himself would not approach him. I gave him a shout out (in my best Billy Dee Williams voice - minus Gerry Curl). He looked pretty sad sitting there with his Starbucks latte, his manager and his memories. The last time I saw him like this (other than Thursday), was when Han Solo was frozen in Carbonite. Shame on you Indy ... I thought we treated our loyalty with much more regard. If Dame Edna or Dame Judith Dench (the same person I think) show up in our burgh, I'll just redirect them to Fort Wayne where they be treated like the regal eagles they are.

Ha! Poor Chewy. You'd think the geeks would show a little more respect. I'm guessing he wasn't wearing the costume and therein lay the rub.

I couldn't tell any difference. I don't think he wears the head to the Chewbacca costume in the movies!

I think the problem might be overexposure. By my count, since 2001, he's been to most Gen Cons and all of the Star Wars Celebrations. I personally had a chance to approach him but couldn't think of a single question to say. My good friend, a major Star Wars fan, failed to offer any suggestions.

Perhaps it would be different if we here Stateside knew more about his career in England, but asking about experiences that date back to 1976 and as "recent" as 2006 just seemed like rubbing it in all our faces how old we're getting. I agree, it should have been better. But it's hard to blame the fans when they've probably asked all their questions and gotten all their stuff signed five years ago. I think a freshening of the media guests is what might be in order. Having said that, it's great that Mayhew takes the time to grace us with his presence and there's no easy answer.
