Through traffic will be blocked until September as work moves from south to north

Westside Indianapolis residents will soon have more barricades to avoid.

As part of a sewer-improvement project, part of Cold Spring Road will be closed to through traffic in November or December and stay closed until September 2010, said Tim Shutters, project manager.

“It will be a moving closure,” Shutters said. “We’ll probably start at Lafayette Road and move to 30th Street. The closures will move with the project.”

The closure must occur so crews can excavate a trench to install a sewer pipe as part of the $100 million Belmont North Relief Interceptor project.

Residents still will have access to their homes, but the way they get to their driveways might change based on where sewer construction is occurring at the time, Shutters said.

An alternate route includes using Lafayette Road to Kessler Boulevard and then to 30th Street.

Throughout the entire project, seven miles of pipeline will be laid from 10th Street and Miley Avenue north to Juan Solomon Park near Grandview Drive and Fox Hill Drive, said Kit Werbe, spokeswoman for the Department of Public Works. The new pipeline will run somewhat parallel to an existing sewer line.

When the extension is complete, about 2,300 homes in Center, Pike, Washington and Wayne townships will hook up to sewers through the city’s septic tank elimination program. It will be paid for through the State Revolving Fund, which provides loans to communities for projects that improve wastewater and drinking water infrastructure, Werbe said.

Some area residents have been concerned because the project includes a lift station in Juan Solomon Park. However, city planners said the park will see improvements, including a new playground, restrooms, a water fountain and a community room.

As part of the project, bike lanes will also be added to the east side of Cold Spring Road, Shutters said. However they won’t connect to specific paths yet. The project includes the new bike lanes so that they won’t have to be added later.
