Settlers Day 'probably the best ever,' organizer says
Franklin Township residents filled Southeastern Avenue in Wanamaker for the 23rd annual Old Settlers Day Street Fair.
Sponsored by the Franklin Township Lions Club, the fair last weekend included more than 100 booths with art, crafts, food, entertainment, games and flea market items.
“We had a great turnout, probably the best ever,” said Lions Club President Ken Pitcher.
“It was just a gorgeous day,” he said of the weather Sunday, which was considerably cooler and breezier than the scorching temperatures of the days prior.
In addition to being the best turnout, Pitcher said, the event also raised the most money ever for the club, though the exact total was unavailable.
The money will help fund scholarships, community programs and Lions Club programs, he said.
During the street fair, the club also hosted its 10th annual classic car show.
This year there were more than 150 vehicles on display, up from the average of 100 to 120 cars, Pitcher said.
“Oh man, it was great,” he said.
Southeastern Avenue, the main road through downtown Wanamaker, was closed from Northeastern Avenue to McGaughey Road from for the street fair.
The event culminated Sunday night with a community fireworks display at Franklin Central High School.
