A stray bullet from a semiautomatic rifle fired by a New Year’s reveler wounded a southern Indiana teenager in the leg, according to police.A 13-year-old girl was in her Floyd County home when she was struck by a round fired from an AR-15 rifle by Troy Brown, 44, police said.Sheriff Darrell Mills said Friday three of at least a dozen rounds fired by Brown outside his home in a neighboring subdivision at midnight entered the teen’s home. A thin tree line separates the two developments, and the two homes are about 200 yards apart. The teen, whose name Mills did not have, was struck just after midnight and was taken to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, where surgery was performed to remove the bullet. Mills said the wound was not life-threatening.Another bullet penetrated a refrigerator in the victim’s home and a third one went through a window, Mills said.Brown faces a preliminary charge of criminal recklessness resulting in bodily injury, a Class C felony punishable by two to eight years in prison upon conviction.“We get a lot of calls” on holidays about people firing weapons skyward, Mills said. “This was obviously not something that happened from firing up into the air.”Vance Fulkerson, a next-door neighbor of the victim, said there was a lot of noisy celebrating going on when the New Year began.“I thought most of it was fireworks,” he said. But even with all the noise, Fulkerson said, “You could hear that weapon going off in rapid succession.”
