Rolls-Royce Corp. in Indianapolis has asked a federal judge to dismiss a gender discrimination lawsuit against it by two high-level female managers who say the British-owned firm’s Indianapolis facility is a male-dominated bastion that underpays females in white-collar jobs.

In a court filing this week, Rolls-Royce said the plaintiffs in the three-year-old lawsuit haven’t proven they were discriminated against or that their case should be opened up as a class action to as many as 537 other female engineers and managers at the jet engine manufacturer’s Indianapolis facility.

“Plaintiffs filed this purported class action without any good faith basis… but in the hopes of uncovering some shred of evidence to support their speculative class claims. They had no evidence at the outset of this litigation and they have none now,” said Rolls-Royce, asking the judge to toss the case out.

Rona Pepmeier and Sally Randall are managers at the company who allege they have been underpaid compared to their male counterparts and passed over for promotions because they are women in an “undeniably male-dominated and controlled organization.”

If certified as a class action, the lawsuit could be one of the largest gender discrimination actions ever against an Indianapolis company.
