The robot used to end a standoff Tuesday near IUPUI is one of three the County Emergency Management Agency owns.

The robot, called a Vanguard, is smaller and lighter than the other two. It’s 2 feet tall, 16 inches wide and 30 inches deep and weighs 120 pounds. It has four cameras and a voice.

The agency bought the $80,000 robot six weeks ago with a U.S. Department of Homeland Security grant.

The other two robots weigh 485 pounds, are 4 feet high and cost $120,000 each. The first was purchased in 2000.

The larger robots can cover more ground and are sturdy enough to help rescue people.
