Revenue stream for state, convenience for customer
I am in favor of allowing closed-container beer, wine and liquor sales on Sundays.
I think that the change would bring additional revenue to our state by preventing people living near the state line from crossing over to neighboring states to buy alcohol on Sundays. It also would save those of us who shop for groceries on Sunday from having to make an extra trip to buy alcoholic drinks.
I have heard several arguments against the changes, and I don’t think any of them hold water. The loudest voices against changes to our liquor laws seem to be liquor stores and restaurants, which stand to lose the unfair advantage of monopolies in pre-chilled alcohol sales and Sunday sales, followed by groups and individuals that oppose alcohol consumption in general.
The change has several advantages and no legitimate disadvantages. Amending our liquor laws will give many consumers the convenience of buying beer or wine with the rest of their groceries and will give Indiana a bit of extra income as well.
