Three escaped the residence on their own, but the fourth was trapped on the second floor because she was afraid to navigate through the thick black smoke, Reith said. The woman broke a window with her hand to alert firefighters that she was in the house, and they escorted her down the stairs. The woman suffered minor cuts to her hand and was checked at the scene but not hospitalized. The fire remains under investigation. Charles Neal, a retired Indianapolis firefighter who owns the home, said he thought the fire started in an upper rear bedroom of the home and may have been electrical.
