Replogle puts his heft behind offensive role at key juncture
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana football coach Bill Lynch has described starting defensive tackle Adam Replogle as a player who would do anything asked of him on the football field.
Saturday, Lynch asked Replogle to play fullback on three goal-line plays, and the 282-pound freshman responded.
He was the intended receiver on a third-down play from the 2-yard line, and was the lead blocker for Trea Burgess when he scored on a run up the middle on the next play in IU’s 31-28 loss to Wisconsin.
“It’s what we wanted to have happen,‘’ Lynch said. "We had been getting down there inside the 2-yard line and getting stopped. One of the things we had thought about was let’s put another big body in there as a lead blocker, and Adam was a great fullback in high school.’’
Lynch talked to Replogle early last week about being part of the offense.
“When coach asked me, I was really excited about it,‘’ Replogle said. "I just want to do anything I can to help this team.’’
Taylor makes another play
Senior safety Collin Taylor had two interceptions and a forced fumble last week against Iowa. Saturday, he recovered a fumble early in the first quarter when Wisconsin’s David Gilreath mishandled a punt.
In Gilreath’s defense, he lost the ball in the sun. It hit him in the chest and bounced right to Taylor at the 10-yard line.
“I was catching punts before the game down there and we were all having trouble with the sun,‘’ Taylor said. "As I came down the field, I could tell he was having trouble, too. It kind of hit off his chest and his arms, and it almost looked like he kind of handed it to me. And that was nice. I appreciate him doing that.’’
Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said he realized very quickly that Indiana had made a strategic decision of where to warm up before the game.
“I’m sure that’s why they picked that end zone to warm up in,‘’ Bielema said. "We never got to work full-length kicks with the sun in our eyes, and that was a big advantage.’’
Willis out; Payton in
Running back Darius Willis re-injured his sore right ankle on the second play of the third quarter. Bryan Payton filled in with 48 yards on eight carries. Willis was limited to 6 yards on six carries.
