INDIANAPOLIS — A Butler University professor who has run for Congress several times says he will seek the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Rep. Andre Carson of Indianapolis next year.

Marvin Scott announced today that he was entering the race to provide “fresh ideas and alternative solutions to Congress.”

Scott is a sociology professor at Butler whose most-prominent political campaign came in 2004 when he was the Republican challenger to Democratic Sen. Evan Bayh, which Bayh won with 62 percent of the vote.

Scott also was the unsuccessful GOP nominee in 1994 and 2000 for the congressional district that covers most of Indianapolis.

Carson won election last year to a full term succeeding his late grandmother Julia Carson.
