As Marion County Clerk, I have the privilege of serving on the Vote Indiana Team, a group of elected and community leaders working together to update the state’s Help America Vote Act plan. The plan provides an outline on how to spend federal dollars to improve Indiana’s elections.

Our group has met twice this year and intends to meet a few more times before the plan is submitted for public review. The next meeting is at 1:30 p.m. April 17 in the state’s conference center located in Government Center South. These meetings are open to the public and available to watch live on the secretary of state’s Web site (www.in.gov.sos).

If residents have any topics they would like me to bring up at the meetings or suggestions on how we can improve our Election Day operations, send an e-mail to elections@indygov.org or call (317) 327-VOTE.

Democracy is not a spectator sport. The easiest way to get involved is to make sure your voter registration records are up to date. Even in this “off-year” with no scheduled elections, our office welcomes those interested in being a poll worker. 2010 is just around the corner.
