About 60 people bowed their heads and prayed for peace Wednesday during a vigil at the Cumberland apartment where a man was gunned down last week.

The mourners huddled beneath umbrellas as a steady rain fell outside the townhouse unit where Andrew Rhea, 19, was shot to death on March 11 at the Arbors of Cumberland in the 11500 block of East Colonywood Drive.

“Let us pray for one another and pray for the family as they continue to try to make sense out of this senseless death,” said Joe Zelenka of the Church Federation of Greater Indianapolis. Zelenka led prayers asking for peace, comfort and the will to forgive.Jana Waldon, Rhea’s mother, said her son was planning to join the Air Force. She said the outpouring of support from the community has helped lift her family’s spirits.“(The vigil) is an awesome way to make people aware of the violence in our community,” Waldon said. “It may get people more involved in our community to help stop the crime.”Waldon said her family is at peace because they know Andrew was a man of faith and is now in heaven. Also in attendance was the victim’s father, Robert Rhea.Police believe Andrew Rhea was killed during an attempted robbery. It was Cumberland’s first homicide in nearly 12 years.Residents saw two to three men flee the scene in a white van with a blue stripe shortly after the shooting.Cumberland Police Chief Mike Crooke, a former homicide investigator in Indianapolis, said Wednesday that detectives are narrowing in on a suspect but still need the public to come forward with information.Police circulated reward posters at the vigil urging people to provide information to Crime Stoppers, (317) 262-TIPS.
