Always a fan of Irvington history, Ron Huggler, 70, became interested in the community’s old railroad depot when he found a photograph on the eBay online site that showed the building’s east side — a feature of the building unseen by anyone he knew.

Long ago demolished, the depot could be seen only from the other three sides in every photograph owned by the Irvington Historical Society.

“I got the idea of building a miniature model of Irvington that included the old depot,” said Huggler, a lifelong Irvington resident. “I spent my summer in the garage.”

The result of Huggler’s labors can be seen at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, 5350 E. University Ave. It’s part of a larger exhibit focused on railroad history in Irvington and, more broadly, all of Indianapolis.

The display makes a nice addition to the Irvington Historical Society’s collection, said Steve Barnett, the organization’s executive director.

“We’ve devoted some attention to the importance of transportation to Irvington’s history when we talk about things like the importance of its location along the National Road,” Barnett said, “but we probably haven’t given enough attention to the railroad.”

Broadcast personality Howard Caldwell recorded a CD providing narration to accompany Huggler’s display.

Barnett has a particular interest in the turntable on Audubon Road featured in Huggler’s layout.

“We wonder if that’s still there under layers of pavement,” Barnett said, adding he hopes the historical society someday can find the money to excavate the area of the street where it might remain.
