Racino money went to lower property taxes

An Oct. 26 letter asserted that the state “grabbed” racino money at the expense of taxpayers. The writer missed the point and some key facts.

First, the writer is upset because the state won’t sanction an illegal activity. But more than that, he is wrong on what the state did with money from racino permits. Every penny of those proceeds went directly to property tax reduction so that taxpayers were protected not exploited.

Taxpayers saw every bit of that money. Let’s not misinform the public about how that money was spent, and let’s not pretend that those involved in illegal gambling are being unjustly hurt.
