Q&A with Jessica Simpson: She's going country
The music/reality TV/movie/tabloid star says she's going country and not looking back.
"I plan on making country music for a looooooong time!" she told Indy.com in a recent e-mail interview.
Simpson will introduce Hoosier fans to her new style when she performs during the Indiana State Fair at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 7 on the Hoosier Lottery Grandstage.
"I plan to sing almost my entire new album, and some of my favorite country songs growing up," she said.
Simpson's much anticipated country album debut, "Do You Know" from the Columbia Nashville label, is set for a Sept. 9 release.
In advance of her State Fair appearance, Simpson talked about her transition to country, her favorite fair memories and more.
Lots of legendary music acts have headlined the Indiana State Fair -- The Beatles, Johnny Cash and Diana Ross and the Supremes. How does it feel to be in that company?
I feel completely honored to be in the same company with such amazing, talented and legendary artists! I have been listening to them since I was young -- they've inspired me to be the artist that I have become today for sure.
What are some of your favorite memories of going to the state fair as a kid?
I used to perform (dance) at the State Fair of Texas when I was in the fifth grade, and I used to LOVE to go see the pigs in the petting zoo. I always wanted one after I saw them there for the first time!
How has your transition into country music gone, and how is it different for you than what you have done before?
I have always felt at home singing country music, and actually tried to sing it before now, but it just wasn't the right timing. I grew up listening to country, so the transition has felt comfortable for me. The country community has made me feel so welcome.
How much are you looking to expand your acting career, or are you focusing more on music right now?
I love to act; it's a different outlet for me to be creative and challenge myself, so you never know when I'll do another project. But right now I'm so excited to have everyone hear this album, and I want to do all I can to get it out there. I have a lot of fair dates booked, and probably a tour at the top of the year, so you'll hopefully be seeing a lot of me singing the next few months!
You have a number of fashion/beauty products; do you have plans to expand this part of your marketing?
My perfume, Fancy, comes out Aug. 15, and I have plans to expand to dresses and even luggage!
Can you describe the pressure/feelings of having every public action analyzed for millions to see? How are you able to maintain your privacy?
It's definitely a challenge to try to maintain some sort of private life with all the interest people seem to have with celebrities lately. It's crazy! I constantly find myself looking to see if we're being followed, even to the grocery store.
I can't believe anyone would really want to know what I ate for lunch, or watch me pump my gas, but I guess somebody does because photographers are everywhere! At the end of the day, I can't worry about what I might look like, or if someone's taking pictures from behind a bush somewhere, because it would literally drive me crazy! I try to just do what I do and not read all the comments people write on the Internet.
What is your favorite Indiana memory?
I've been to Indianapolis a few times on tour, but one of my favorite memories was singing at the Indy 500!
Hey, Jessica! Date a Colt!
OK, Mizz Simpson, let's face facts:
Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is cute and charming, but he hasn't won any Super Bowl rings. You're America's buxom sweetheart, and you deserve a professional-athlete beau who is a proven winner with a spotless reputation and gleaming teeth. You need an Indianapolis Colt. A list of Indy's most eligible:
TE Dallas Clark
NFL's highest-paid tight end was just rewarded with $36 million, so he combines good looks and great hands with financial security.
WR Marvin Harrison
In light of the news that he has permits for 25 guns ... if nothing else you won't need to worry about bodyguards.
DE Josh Thomas
He's perfect! Quiet, introspective guy who strums the guitar and writes his own songs. Simpson & Thomas, coming to a stage near you?
G Ryan Lilja
Understated Kansas City native has a great sense of humor -- watch out for his pranks -- and also signed a new five-year contract.
CB Kelvin Hayden
Polite and friendly Chicago kid raised by his mother, who he gave his Super Bowl ring. So you know this guy respects women.
DE Dwight Freeney
Coolest cat in the locker room. Colts' all-time leading sack machine is also one smooth operator.
S Bob Sanders
Don't let his hard-hitting reputation scare you. Off field, Sanders is humble and laid back.
RB Joseph Addai
Doubt it could ever last. Although he's a Texan, just like you, the reclusive runner would hate being in front of more cameras in the offseason.
