Put Comments Back on Party Crasher!

Dear Indy.com,

Now that you've switched from INtake to Indy.com, I think you need to put the commenting feature back on the Party Crasher galleries. I remember a time when people could comment on a photo and there would be some really funny ones. Now I look at the pictures and want to say something so bad yet I can only say it to myself.

If we are going to "socially network" we should have all the interaction we can. You can have the comments lead back to profiles so you don't have to worry as much about negative comments.

Forever Yours, Randy Daytona

Not really. Just trying to think of the regular person. I mean, if people say mean stuff about me, well, that's just comes with the territory. A perfectly nice person out on the town who just happens to be caught in an unflattering photograph doesn't deserve to be fodder for wiseasses who think they're being funny.

Here's a thought via Zombieguy:

What if we allowed for comments on the celebrity galleries rather than Party Crasher?

Not a bad idea, Zombieguy.

What's the point in that? Just do it or don't. Not everyone is going to be happy. If someone leaves mean comments then act on it. It's pretty simple.

Let's be honest, it's more fun to make fun of celebrities than real people, anyway.

It's not that simple. There are two good reasons not to allow comments on PartyCrasher

  1. The subjects in the photos weren't told up front that people would be ridiculing them, and many of them later requested that the photos be removed. This increases production time and costs money.

  2. During the time that comments were activated, the overall traffic on PartyCrasher dropped by nearly 1/3. In this business, page views equal $$$, so we have to be careful about launching any feature that decreases the overall traffic.

Celebs on the other hand, are fair game, since they live in the public eye.

I love this picture of Ben Neff, online producer of Indy.com. No other new media guru can hold up to the wrath that is the crushing will of Zod!

In conclusion: Indy.com users are free people. That is why this is termed a social technology. Go forth and use your volition, but please be considerate.

Strange things afoot at the Circle (K)

Alas, I loved the comments. I must admit though, it had a drastic effect on traffic. Most of the photo gallery applications out there that allow threaded comments with photos end up being no better than a middle school lunch table...

Kid A: "Your Mommas so fat..."

GROUP: "How fat was she?"

Kid A: "She was SOOOOOOOO fat her cerial bowl comes with a lifeguard!"

GROUP: "Oh dang, no he didn't... clatter, oooowh!"

I hate to say it, but there is no way that poor old Ben Neff could keep up with all the flaggin. If you're clever though, you can probably find a lot of ways to talk about (and linkup) indy.com content.

The best mama jokes subtly combine insults. It's a science. Check it: one switch of 'cereal' to 'water' and all the sudden your mom's fat and a dog.

Kid A: "Your Momma's so fat..."

GROUP: "How fat is she?"

Kid A: "She is SOOOOOOOO fat her water bowl comes with a lifeguard!"

GROUP: "Oh dang, no he didn't... clatter, oooowh!"

Actually, that's how Ben looks in the office every day. Really.

I just ran into this post, can't believe I missed it for so long.

After about a week of the first round of comments the number of people declining to get their photos taken jumped dramatically. Instead of 1 out of 10 groups not wanting a photo it was suddenly 1 out of 4. People didn't like knowing they'd be subject to public discussion.

Matter of fact lots of people cited the comments as the reason they didn't want a photo taken. A few weeks after the comments were gone, things were back to normal.
