Police investigate father's shooting of adult son
A Noblesville father shot his adult son this morning after the son had lunged at the father with a knife, police said.
Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputy Vicky Dunbar said Roy E. Baber, 69, shot his son Duane E. Baber, 44, in both legs above the knees shortly before 9:46 a.m. today at the elder Baber’s home in the 8700 block of Luann Drive, Noblesville. The son had threatened his father with a knife after a heated argument, although Dunbar didn’t know what the two were disagreeing about, police were told.
No criminal charges have been filed, police said.
“The initial aggressor in the situation was the son,” Dunbar said. “It’s possible the shooting was in self-defense.”
After being shot, Duane Baber crawled from a back hallway into the kitchen to retrieve his lighter and cigarettes, police said. He was sitting on the floor smoking when officers arrived, while his father remained in the rear of the home.
Duane Baber was sent via ambulance to Methodist Hospital, where he was in surgery late this afternoon, hospital spokesman Gene Ford said. Roy Baber was taken to the Sheriff’s Department headquarters, where he cooperated fully with investigators, Dunbar said.
