Intruders assaulted and robbed an elderly couple after barging into their Northwestside home this morning.

The robbers stole a small safe with a large amount of cash, Indianapolis Metropolitan police said.

Jim Williams, 74, and his wife, Nancy Williams, 70, reported the invasion at 8:36 p.m. from their home in the 3100 block of Salt Lake Road. The couple was not hurt, police said.

When the couple returned from breakfast in Brownsburg, someone knocked on their front door, said Matthew Mount, a sergeant with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.

Nancy Williams answered the door. She was instantly hit, grabbed and shoved into a chair by one of two robbers, police said. The man threw a blanket over her head and told her to be quiet.

A second robber hit Bill Williams in the face and tried to tie him up, police said. The intruders went through the house looking for valuables and found an 18-by-18-by-10-inch safe and put it and some jewels into a brown paper bag.
