Police chase ends in used-car lot crash
A suspected auto thief was arrested after the man allegedly rammed a stolen truck into a police car on the Southside this morning.Officer Mark Spears was not seriously hurt in the crash that damaged his squad car and eight other vehicles in a used car lot in the 3100 block of Madison Avenue about 7:50 a.m.Spears was helping other officers in a car chase when the suspect driving a stolen landscape truck struck Spears’ cruiser head-on and continued into several more vehicles at Honest Abe’s Auto Sales.The suspect tried to run, but Spears subdued him with a Taser.Minutes before the crash, Susan Handlon and her 6-year-old son were outside of their nearby Bacon Street home when the speeding truck raced past.“He hit two wheels turning the corner,” Handlon said. “He almost turned that whole damn thing over. It was a pretty scary morning.”Police had been searching for the truck, which was one of three recently stolen from Landscape Concepts Management, 4008 Rockville Road, Lt. Jeff Duhamell said.Spears is the brother of IMPD Chief Michael Spears. He was treated at an outpatient facility for a foot injury, said Duhamell, a spokesman for IMPD.David McGuire, 41, was arrested at the scene and faces several charges including fleeing and vehicle theft.McGuire was carrying suspected methamphetamine at the time of his arrest, Duhamell said.
