INDY JAZZ FEST: I'll be attending this music event with pencil in ear and notebook in hand. on Friday June 13 and Saturday June 14. If you're planning to attend, look me up, where I'll challenge you to an exchange a poem with me about the day's activities. (Added June 5)

NEW DAY FOR VOICE: VOICE: Creative Writing for High School Students, has changed days. It is now scheduled to meet 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursdays (although there's no meeting on June 12). Instructor: Rachel Sahaidachny. Location: Writers' Center of Indiana, 812 E. 67th St., Indianapolis. Participants will engage in thinking and writing exercises guaranteed to generate ideas for stories and poems. Enrollment limited to 15. Free. RONCALLI STUDENT: Devin Patrick Roach of Roncalli High School, Indianapolis, is a first-place winner in the Grade 10 division of the 2008 U.S. "Try Prayer! It Works!" contest. YANK RACHELL POEMS: Two local poets, Norbert Krapf of Indianapolis and Scott Brewer of Carmel, report they have been invited to read their poems about Yank Rachell during a tribute CD release concert for the late mandolin player. The tribute, 3 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday June 8 at the Indiana History Center, 450 W. Ohio St., also serves as a fundraiser for Yank's granddaughter Sheena, who played bass for Yank and now suffers from a rare lung disease. Tickets are $10 advance or $12 at the door (317-232-1882). Norbert's poem is "Pig Belly Blues"; Scott's poem "Everyday Blues" appears in his book Indiana Instinct Everyday Blues. (Updated June 1)

NEW VENUE: Bookmama's has announced an Open Mic for Poetry & Music at 7:30 p.m. Friday June 13 in its new Underground 9 Studio, 9 S. Johnson Ave., Indianapolis. Admission is free. I don't know if this is one-shot deal or a monthly series. I'll let you know next week.
