When the curtain goes up tonight at the Plainfield High School auditorium, the stage may seem nearly bare of scenery and props.

Not to worry. The stage is supposed to start as a blank canvas, where the troupe of young actors will gradually, and comically, fill in the scenery and dialogue of a play-within-a-play contained in the script of “Curtain Going Up.”

“It’s just a good laugh,” said teacher and play director Jennifer Paske. “It is a simple set, but the cast of characters is very charming.”

“And it was written and set in the 1950s with a lot of the slang from that era, so our kids think it is pretty funny, and there is a lot of foot-stomping, physical comedy.”

“Curtain Going Up” is about the adventures and relationships of the teachers and students of the fictional Riverview High School, where a cast is trying to prepare to perform a play — the play-within-a-play gambit.

It is the first play for young high school drama teacher Miss Irene Burgess, who has much to learn about directing students and even getting along with the grizzled and eccentric janitor in the school.

“Every drama teacher knows that you have to have the custodian on your side,” Paske said, referring to school life, even in current day.
