Pike ready to name girls hoops coach
The Pike High School athletic department will submit the name of Ben Davis assistantSara Strahmas its girls basketball coach at a school board meeting at 7 p.m. today, according to Pike district athletic directorJames Perkins.
“She provides the kind of role model that you want for a female athlete,” Perkins said of Strahm, who was a star on the court at Ben Davis and the University of Indianapolis and regularly earned academic honors.
Strahm, who could not be reached for comment, was selected from a pool of 22 applicants and four finalists.
She started on the Ben Davis Class 4A state championship team in 2000, earning Indiana All-Star honors. Strahm played at Butler for a season, then transferred to UIndy, where she participated in two NCAA Division II tournaments. She has been an assistant at Ben Davis the past two seasons and previously coached at Danville High School, compiling a 21-23 record from 2005-07.

Diggins, the Indianapolis Star Indiana Miss Basketball, is the MaxPreps National Player of the Year. Benge, who led Ben Davis to its third 4A state championship and some top rankings nationally, is the MaxPreps Coach of the Year.
Diggins, who will play at Notre Dame, led South Bend Washington to a 26-1 record and 4A runner-up finish.
Kelly Faris, who helped Heritage Christian to four straight 2A championships, was named to the MaxPreps third team. Ben Davis guardAlex Bentleywas an honorable mention selection.
Benge also was named the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association 4A Coach of the Year. Plainfield’sCurt Bengewas District 4’s Coach of the Year.
ICGSA first team All-State picks from the Indianapolis area are Bentley, Faris,Claire Freeman(Heritage Christian),Bria Goss(Ben Davis),DeAirra Goss(Ben Davis),Courtney Osborn(Hamilton Southeastern) andChrissy Steffen(Carmel). ICGSA second team All-State selections from the Indianapolis area includeKarli Harris(Fishers),Daress McClung(Lawrence North),Anna Munn(Decatur Central),Jama Sharp(Mooresville),Aulani Sinclair(Eminence),Torrie Thornton(Carmel) andDee Dee Williams(Ben Davis).
The 11th Hall of Fame Golf Tournament will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Rock Hollow Golf Course in Peru, with 11 teams from last year’s state finals in the 18-team field.
Local teams playing are defending state champion and No. 1 Cathedral, No. 2 Avon, No. 3 Hamilton Southeastern, No. 9 Zions- ville, No. 13 Noblesville, No. 18 Center Grove and No. 20 Lebanon.
