'Picnic' on stage at Greenwood High School
Greenwood High School will present the Pulitzer Prize-winning play “Picnic” starting tonight.
The play, written by William Inge, will run through Saturday and is open to the public.
“Picnic,” which won the Pulitzer for drama in 1953, takes place in the adjacent backyards of two middle-aged widows during a Labor Day weekend.
“The one house belongs to Flo Owens (played by Ashley Barton), who lives there with her two maturing daughters, Madge (Kayla Weller) and Millie (Cassie Hanchett), and a boarder who is a spinster schoolteacher (Taylor Self). The other house belongs to Helen Potts (Mallory Ward), who lives with her elderly and invalid mother (Emily Gipson),” according to a summary of the play from the school.
Into this atmosphere comes a young man named Hal Carter (Jon Stephens), whose vitality seriously upsets the group, according to the school’s play summary.
Other cast members include Robert Johnson, Krystiana Krupa, Caleb New, Zach Pacuch and Sierra Vandervort.
The play will be at the school auditorium, 615 W. Smith Valley Road.
Show times are at 7:30 p.m. today, Friday and Saturday.
Tickets are $6 at the door for adults, students and children and $5 for senior citizens.
