Perry student with pellet gun faces expulsion
Expulsion proceedings are under way for a Perry Meridian High School student who brandished a pellet gun in front of the Far Southside school Wednesday afternoon.
The 16-year-old, who repeatedly pointed the gun at fellow students outside the school, was apprehended by school officials. He was then questioned and arrested by police at the school.
In a statement, Superintendent Thomas Little called the safety and security of students top priorities for the district.
“Behavior such as this will not be tolerated,” Little said in the statement.
An adult entering the building at the time of the incident reported the situation to school officials, who promptly began questioning witnesses.
The teen was apprehended without incident shortly after students identified him by name.
Students appeared shocked and scared but did not flee or panic when the weapon was brandished.
The boy held the weapon straight out in front of him and repeatedly pointed it at students as though he were going to shoot, then walked toward a car that was parked near the entrance, according to the witness.
Initially it was not clear whether the weapon was a real handgun, a BB gun or a toy that resembled a gun.
The weapon was seized Wednesday afternoon and it was determined to be an air-soft pellet gun.
The teen, whom district officials declined to name, has been suspended.
A news release from the district said an investigation is being conducted and that expulsion proceedings are under way.
