Franklin — This year’s Johnson County Fair officially kicks off today, but a community parade followed by midget car racing at the fairgrounds Saturday revved up the action.

“I think everything’s progressing forward to have an extremely good fair,” said fair board President Steve Duke, who’s hoping to capitalize on last year’s record midway attendance.

The three-quarter midget racing is new this year at the grandstands. The racing uses a smaller version of the traditional midget cars. Autocross — think regular circular racing combined with demolition derby — and a pickup truck demolition derby also are new.

After Saturday’s parade, a ceremony dedicated a garden area adorned with flagpoles honoring all branches of the military. It was constructed by an honor group of 4-H members. The landscaped area, which also includes 20 picnic tables, is on the south side of the Beef Association and Shriners food buildings.

Today’s activities include motocross racing, a youth talent show and queen contest.

On Monday, unlimited midway ride bracelets will be sold for $14, and a tractor and truck pull will be at 7 p.m.

The fair continues through Saturday. A battle of the bands at 6 p.m. and a demolition derby at 7 p.m. are planned for the final day.
