Panel adds sports complex to comprehensive plan
After some debate, Westfield’s Advisory Plan Commission voted Monday to include a sports complex in the city’s comprehensive plan.
“This seems to me to be the best approach if we’re going to do anything,” commission president Bob Smith said. “I think it’s a fantastic move.”
But not all agreed with Smith.
Commission member Russell Cameron was the only one to vote against the measure, but Bill Sanders came close to siding with Cameron. He voted “yes, with great reluctance.”
A few residents spoke against adding the complex to the city’s comprehensive plan during a public hearing before the vote. One spoke in support of it.
Sanders, Cameron and some residents were concerned because details of the complex have not been determined. Westfield’s Sports Complex Commission, which is working on the project, has discussed building a complex with 74 fields and courts, which would take up about 242 acres.
Cameron and Sanders questioned whether the city could afford such an extensive project. They also wanted to see more details, such as where the complex would be located, before supporting it.
“My problem with the plan is I don’t believe in it and they haven’t shown me enough information to make me believe in it,” Cameron said.
Westfield attorney Brian Zaiger told Plan Commission members that by supporting the complex, they weren’t approving construction plans, they simply were allowing the city to keep its options open.
Matt Skelton, community development director, encouraged the Plan Commission to have faith in the city’s Sports Complex Commission and the City Council, which he said supports the plan.
Though the amendment doesn’t force the city to build anything, Cameron said it might give developers a better chance at getting their proposals approved because they could show that a complex is part of the city’s plan.
“You’ll have no basis to say no,” Cameron said.
The City Council will have the final say whether the complex should be added to the city’s comprehensive plan. The council is expected to vote on the issue Oct. 12.
