Pacers' priorities start from within

Free agency focus will be on re-signing their players, especially Jarrett Jack

The NBA’s free agency period starts today, but the Indiana Pacers’ shopping list is short.

They have about $8 million to spend, and their priorities are to re-sign restricted free agent Jarrett Jack and stay below the luxury tax, expected to kick in at about $68 million next season.

Team president Larry Bird said the Pacers are in the second year of a three-year rebuilding plan and have no intention of deviating.

“We’re going to get down below that and we’re going to build with a young core group,” Bird said. “Then we won’t have any complaints to go forward with.”

The Pacers made qualifying offers to Jack and forward Josh McRoberts on Tuesday, giving them the right to match any offer either receives. Bird has said they want to re-sign both.

Jack made $2 million last season, but is expected to have some suitors this summer. He replaced T.J. Ford in the starting lineup for the final 12 games and ended the season averaging 13.1 points and 4.1 assists.

“Indiana is the first place I want to play,” Jack said Tuesday in a telephone interview. “Like I said over and over, the Pacers are the ones that put me in the position to get a lucrative contract. I would love to come back and play for them for many years to come.”

With limited financial flexibility, they will look to improve the roster through trades, but don’t expect them to move any of their core players — Danny Granger, Roy Hibbert, Brandon Rush or Tyler Hansbrough.

“It’s a three-year plan and I wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize any of these young guys because they are going to be good,” Bird said. “If I can add to that core through a trade, I probably will.”

Look for the Pacers to try to make bargain deals for young, talented players. They could pursue Denver guard Dahntay Jones, Minnesota forward (and former Northwest High School standout) Rodney Carney and Orlando center Marcin Gortat, a restricted free agent.

The Pacers will have 10 players under contract for next season once Hansbrough signs.

Two — Mike Dunleavy and Jamaal Tinsley — won’t be able to help when the season begins. Dunleavy is out indefinitely, and the Pacers are still saddled with the remaining two years and $14.7 million of Tinsley’s contract. They hope to trade him before a July 27 arbitration hearing.

“Right now, if Dunleavy was back, we’d be pretty set in every area,” Bird said. “We need a rugged rebounder that can score some and another point guard because we don’t have Jarrett re-signed. We have some holes we have to fill. We know that.”

Dunleavy’s knee injury has left the Pacers thin on the wing position. Granger and Rush are the only healthy players under contract. Jack also can play shooting guard.

The Pacers didn’t pick up Marquis Daniels’ $7.4 million team option, but there’s a possibility he could re-sign at a lower annual salary.
