A former state legislator and lieutenant governor candidate accused of pretending to be an active lawmaker to avoid a public intoxication arrest surrendered Thursday and was released after posting a $500 cash bond.

A Marion Superior Court judge ordered Dennie Oxley II, 38, English, to submit to two alcohol tests a week while he awaits trial. He has pending drunken driving charges in Crawford County from a February arrest.

Oxley, a Democrat who gave up his Indiana House seat last year to run for lieutenant governor, faces misdemeanor charges of impersonation of a public servant and public intoxication in an incident June 26 at a Downtown Indianapolis gas station.

Rick Kammen, Oxley’s attorney, said after the court hearing that there was another side to the story but declined to elaborate. “The full story of this will be aired out in court,” he said.
