Opera singer to return to Indianapolis for fundraiser
Angela Brown has performed on stages around the world — from the Metropolitan Opera in New York to the Deutsche Oper Berlin in Germany.
But the operatic soprano, who debuted as “Aida” in 2004 at the Met to worldwide acclaim, is making her way back to Indianapolis for a hometown performance.
Brown will give the keynote address at the 23rd annual Start With Art Luncheon on Sept. 3. The business and arts event is an annual fundraiser for the Arts Council of Indianapolis.
This year’s theme is “Creativity at Work.”
“The intent is to help communicate what it really means to be an artist,” said Mike Knight, spokesman for the arts council.
“(The arts) is a difficult profession, and Angela is in a unique position to underscore that because she will be able to talk about growing up in Indianapolis and making choices to go professional and continue on. She demonstrates what it takes to make it.”
The program also will include a performance by Brown, who will head the cast of Indianapolis Opera’s production of Richard Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” in October.
Also on the program will be the announcement of the ARTI Awards. They honor one local corporation, one small business and one volunteer patron annually for extraordinary support of the arts. In addition, the ARTFUL Impact Award will recognize an individual, event or institution that has made a significant impact on the arts in the previous year.
