Notre Dame falls from coaches poll
Week two of the college football season was a difficult one for schools whose initials are OSU.
It was even worse for followers of the Fighting Irish.
The highest ranked of the group heading into the weekend, Oklahoma State, was upset 45-35 by Houston and slid to 17th in the new USA Today Top 25 Coaches’ poll. Ohio State fell from No.7 to No.11 after losing an 18-15 heartbreaker to third-ranked Southern California. Oregon State got a last-minute field goal to prevail 23-21 and stave off an upset bid at UNLV to maintain its No. 24 poll position.
The top five remained unchanged, with Florida holding the top spot while again receiving 56 of 59 first-place votes. Texas remained second, but USC gained some ground on the Longhorns with their late comeback at Ohio State. Texas struggled in the first half before beating Wyoming 41-10.
The Trojans closed the gap from 55 to 31 poll points even though the Longhorns were second or third on every ballot except one which had them fourth. USC also claimed the remaining three No. 1 votes, after getting one a week ago.
Alabama and Penn State continue to round out the top five. The top 10 now includes two potential BCS busters, with Brigham Young climbing to No.9 and Boise State up to No.10.
Notre Dame, which lost in a thriller to archrival Michigan on a late touchdown pass, was this week’s only dropout. But the Wolverines were narrowly edged out of the top 25 by Missouri, which averted an upset bid by Bowling Green.
